Mystery is the Key Strategy
When you do the same thing over and over again in life and in your online business and your social media platforms - you tend to get the same and then lesser results. On the other hadn’t, if you do new, amazing and exciting things - you tend to get a better result! Go figure right?
So - why doesn’t everyone just mix things up all the time, why do we see such repetition instead?
We get comfortable following a set routine, pattern and doing things that are predictable. It’s one less thing to have to concern ourselves with.
We don’t have to worry about failing. Afterall, if we are following our tried and true methods - even if the results are being scaled back - it’s not OUR fault because we KNOW that ‘it’ works because it has worked in the past.
We think it’s easier to do what we know and stick to what we’re used to because that should be relaxing right?
You do the same thing day in day out and wonder why it feels equal parts struggle and boring. Generally at these times you would instead get a boost from getting up, running free and doing something random, grounding, unexpected and beautiful.
It's the same with what we do with respect to business or content strategy in our online businesses.
When you do the same thing day in day out on social media, the platform algorithms notice and will start to scale back your reach back as they can recognise when you aren’t putting as much effort or value in. Insta knows when you use the exact same tags every single day in every single post. Facebook knows how long you spend writing up a post or if you just copy and paste. And people get bored with the same thing over and over.
Things to consider:
New post options are given a boost by the platforms when people use them - i.e. when people share their IGTV episode to their (grid), this gets better reach than other older tried and tested methods. It’s likely that instastories with the new Quiz sticker are also given better reach than story segments without it.
When people post using a variety of post types they get overall better reach than only using the same i.e. when people post via livestream, image, text on Facebook - this is because some audience members prefer certain post types over others and therefore FB tailors their feed accordingly. If you never post what your audience prefers, they are unlikely to see it for an organic post. Plus variety IS the spice of life and you’re probably bored yourself with things if you are never providing points of difference!
Lastly, platforms come and go and new platforms are on the rise. You might find that you have a lot more fun posting and creating content on one of the new platforms with better organic reach rates. But you won’t know until you try and start opening up your eyes to new possibilities!
So. If you don’t start trying new things online - you may as well just give up in undramatic fashion because the platforms, algorithms and users want to see an evolution, an expansion and an increase in vibe.
It’s time to drop what and the why you’ve been peddling things every day since you showed up to the party. It’s time to change things up and get your second wind.
It’s time to get a little wild and surprising.
